Somatic Therapy in Buffalo, NY

Somatic therapy is trauma therapy that takes the body seriously. It works with the nervous system, breath, posture, tension, and the patterns the body learns when it has had to protect itself.

At Samadhi Healing Collective, somatic therapy is not a single technique. It is a way of working that runs through EMDR, Ketamine-Assisted Psychotherapy, parts work, and adjunctive bodywork with affiliated providers.

What “somatic” actually means

The word somatic comes from the Greek soma, meaning the living body. Somatic therapy works with what the body knows: felt sense, held tension, breath, and the impulse to fight, flee, freeze, or shut down.

When trauma happens, survival responses can get interrupted. Somatic work helps those unfinished responses slowly complete in a setting safe enough to allow it.

Clinical Perspective

Somatic therapy is not about forcing release. It is about pacing the work so the nervous system can process what it could not process at the time.

EMDR is somatic therapy

EMDR is often described as memory processing, but the work is also deeply body-based. A standard EMDR session tracks where disturbance is felt in the body, returns to the body between sets, and follows the body’s response as the memory shifts.

For people who have done years of talk therapy and felt the limits of insight, EMDR can open a door that words alone could not.

Ketamine-Assisted Psychotherapy is somatic therapy

Ketamine, used in a therapeutic frame, can loosen the usual filters of the nervous system. During that opening, clients may experience release of held tension, reconnection to numbed parts of the body, or a renewed sense that the body is safe to inhabit.

At Samadhi, KAP is therapist-led and in-office. The frame is preparation, journey, and integration. The goal is not the experience itself, but what becomes possible afterward.

Bodywork as an extension of the clinical work

Some of the deepest somatic work happens outside the therapy room. Many clients work in parallel with Katrina Burgin, LMT, of Body Solace Massage Studio, an affiliated trauma-aware bodyworker.

Trauma-informed massage

Skilled bodywork that meets the nervous system where it is and works with protective patterns rather than against them.

Sound bathing

A vibrational practice that supports the nervous system through sound rather than touch, often useful during integration phases.

Who somatic therapy is for

Somatic therapy can be useful for people who feel that talk alone is not getting them where they want to go. This may include people with complex trauma, PTSD, dissociation, chronic activation, or a persistent sense of being disconnected from the body.

Referring clinicians often describe these clients as “stuck.” Somatic therapy can help unstick patterns that insight alone has not reached.

What this looks like at Samadhi Healing Collective

The work begins with a careful intake. From there, we build a plan together. For some people, EMDR is the primary modality. For others, parts work comes first. For others, KAP creates the opening that allows other work to take hold.

The plan is never fixed. It changes as the work changes.
